Pre-study on transportation and storage solutions

The project goal was to clarify how a joint regional solution could lead to a rapid and more cost-effective implementation of carbon capture and storage projects in the Baltic Sea region. The study focused in particular upon possible (joint) solutions for transportation and storage with indications and descriptions of costs, economy and handling of risk elements, upsides/downsides and possible transboundary issues to be solved in joint solutions.

The report served as an input to BASREC and the Conference on CCS in Warsaw.

Generally, there are two main measures that governments can apply to speed up implementation of carbon capture, transportation and storage projects:

  • Clarify the regulatory framework for all elements in the CCS chain (capture, transportation and storage).
  • Give incentives to the development of CCS projects, both capture, transportation and storage solutions.
